  • Climping beach is also known as Atherington Beach, as with many along the south coast, has wooden groynes and is pebbles at high tide. But at low tide, a huge expanse of dark, fine, hard-packed sand is exposed, making it an ideal spot for families and shallow swimming. Very popular with kitesurfers and windsurfers with grass areas for setting up.

Climping Beach is a quieter area of coastline than its neighbours of Littlehampton and Bognor Regis. Much of the area is now designated of scientific interest, and parts are a nature reserve, although many sections of the sand dunes are now fenced off to protect against erosion and help local species to thrive.

The actual beach is exposed and struggles with coastal erosion and can change it’s appearance between visits.

A great place to base a coastal walk at high tide you have pebble and grass banks whilst at low tide you have the flat hard compact sand of the beach. You can head in either direction; to the East you have the dune eco-system and then Littlehampton. To the West you are backed by countryside and then hit the many private beach estates (Elmer, Middleton-on-sea, Felpham) that line this stretch of Coast.

Facilities include car parking (charges apply), cafe with outdoor seating, toilets and outside shower, field available for hire. You also have a pub half a mile back up the road from the beach. Out of hours the car park is closed but a few spaces available on the road by the beach.

    No jet skis, no camping.

Climping Beach has dog restrictions. Dogs allowed on lead in one of the carparks and free to roam on the beach.

Horses not allowed March to October during car park opening hours.

Wonderfully quiet beach, excellent water quality.
Love this beach I discovered this year … A shingle beach yes but turning to sand when the tide goes out and the water quality is excellent! Been sunbathing here daily for the past week as the good weather has arrived and during the weekdays sometimes not a soul to be seen. Bliss!

      Peaceful alternative to Littlehampton.
For the first time in about 18 year we couldn’t find any parking in Littlehampton. We decided to work our way down the coast beach by beach to see if we could find another spot. Climping was the first one and the car park was a good size with plenty of space and a super little cafe. The beach is mainly shingle and not too crowded. It is off the beaten track, but if you don’t need all the added extras of the bigger towns, then this is a good alternative. Now our kids are older we’ll happily be back. There are few “activities” going on as you need to bring everything with you, but with good water quality and a clean beach, I’d say that is a 5* reason for rating Climping top notch.

      A world apart from Littlehampton.
This is a great beach and for many visitors to Littlehampton it is missed. Just walk over the bridge and you are in another world of sand dunes and peace. Nice cafe by the car park.
