  • Seaham Beach is a long stretch of sand sitting beneath grassy cliffs and is part of the Durham Heritage Coast.

The beach is often used for sea angling competitions.

Until 1921, Seaham was the location of the largest glass-bottle works in Britain. Founded by John Candlish in 1853, under the patronage of the 4th Marquess of Londonderry. During the works operation glass waste was dumped into sea, and now with every tide sand-polished glass stones can be gathered.

Parking at various positions along the seafront, toilets, picnic area, pub.

As you move towards the harbour and Red Acre Beach you get the main part of the town with a selection of places to eat.

We have no dog information for Seaham beach.

A beach of secrets, that everyone knows about…
Seaham beach is one of those places that has the look of an old fashioned Victorian resort but has a hidden secret, the sea glass. I spent a few hours chatting with some American tourists while walking the beach and found out how it is a kind of Mecca for sea glass hunters from all over. This group had travelled from California just for the chance of finding their own “multi” which was something I hadn’t heard of, but learnt was something almost unique to Seaham due to the presence of a bottleworks in the late Victorian era. In fact we found several and I was hooked. By the end of the afternoon we’d found around a hundred pieces in total, and they were so excited that i gace them my pieces as a thank you for sharing this information. a special place…
When i’d finished I went to the Lookout at the Marina and discovered a cabinet of Sea Glass jewellery from a local maker, Peblsrock. These pieces were remarkable and i decided to buy some earrings as a surprise for my girlfriend. A really fruitful day out. If you also take in the statue of Tommy on the promenade and try some really good fish and chips opposite, you would have had a great day out. I must return again soon and see what else i can find.
