Slieve Gullion is a mountain very popular for walkers in the County Armagh in Northern Ireland.
This is a very high mountain forming the centre of the Ring of Gullion and is a renown Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with great pathways, forest trails and roads through the countryside. This ring dyke formed over 50 million years ago from an erupting volcano so it’s also of great geological importance and supports much plantlife associated with this kind of soil development. There is also a variety of bog, wetlands and loughs affecting vegetation.
Apparently, people have lived in the area for over 6000 years and it’s full of Megalithic monuments such as stone tombs and a huge earth embankbent from the Iron Age witha rampart over an ancient route to Eamhain Macha (Ulster)! This area has deep and mysterious association with the local myths and legends like the one where a man was bewitched at the Lough of the Calliagh Bhirra! The claim is that if you swim in the Lough, your hair will turn snow white instantly!
