Spring is here and we’re all out and about enjoying the sunshine and there’s nothing nicer to do than to stop for a delicious cream tea after that day on the beach.
Whether you’re surfing, hiking, walking the dog or just sunbathing a good cup of tea with scones, jam and cream just make the day. We’ve hunted up a few great spots recommended by others, to enjoy cream tea close to the beach around the United Kingdom.
1. Best home made cream tea: Isle of Wight
It has to be at Warren Farm on the Isle of Wight. They bake their scones in an Aga…. and use local butter and flour. They’re light and fluffy and served with fresh berries and lashings of cream plus jam!
2. Best welcome treat: Truro, Cornwall
Classic Cottages actually offer cream teas as a welcome when you get there. The scones are packed in a biscuit tin in the kitchen and there’s clotted cream in the fridge and really good jam to spread thickly on top! The tea’s good too. You can devour this feast looking over the meadows not too far from the beach.
3. Best cream tea with a view: Idle Rocks Hotel, St Mawes, Cornwall
Idle Rocks Hotel in St Mawes has an enviable position on the edge of the harbour wall on the outermost tip of the Roseland Peninsula. Afternoon tea is served on the terrace which is perfect for watching the all the passersby and the boats in the harbour. A traditional Cornish cream tea will set you back £6.95 but it’s well worth it and the scones are huge! Open daily, this stunning venue is the perfect way to end your beach walk!
4. The most quirky British: Brighton, The Tea Cosy
Tea room etiquette is an art at The Tea Room in Brighton. Guests are requested not to ‘clink’ their teaspoon against their cups and children need to maintain a quiet decorum. The interior is Union Jacked to the hilt and tradition abounds right down to the whipped cream! A stunning tea time retreat.
5. Best contemporary style cream tea: Swanage, Dorset
The Ocean Bay boasts super-cool indigo-and-white décor and Dorset cream teas are served on the patio or inside overlooking the ocean. It’s an uber chic location for a traditional afternoon tea with friends. Cream tea starts at £4.50 a head. Open Daily.
