Herstmonceux, East Sussex, UK
Herstmonceux Castle is one of the oldest significant brick buildings still standing in England. Work started on this brick castle in 1441, brick was an unusual material for a castle due it's weakness over stone, hence it was more of a fortified house than a true castle. Thus, the builders of Herstmonceux Castle concentrated more on grandeur and comfort than on defence to produce a truly magnificent estate.
