Isle of Vatersay Seaside
The Isle of Vatersay is an island in the Outer Hebrides, connected by causeway to the southern half of the Isle of Barra. It is the most southerly inhabited island in the Western Isles.
Vatersay is approximately 3 miles across by 3 miles deep but erosion from the sea on both sides mean that only a narrow strip of machair stops it from separating into two islands.
This place is rich in wildlife and offers the visitor scenic walks across its windswept landscape. In particular, the Heritage Trail, which can be demanding in places, takes about 3 hours to complete but is richly rewarding, catch sight of ancient archaeological sites and the stunning machair along the way.
