Shanklin Seaside

Shanklin is located within Sandown Bay on the south-east coast of the Isle of Wight. The seafront has an esplanade along the beach with many hotels and restaurants, but you also have the Old Village, located at the top of Shanklin Chine. The town also has a lot of open, green space with some nice parks and gardens.

Shanklin Chine is the Isle of Wight's oldest tourist attraction, first opened in 1817. This famous leafy gorge is much loved by poets, artists and writers. The winding woodland, with its steep sides is a delightful place for rare plants, wildlife and waterfalls.

The original Shanklin community consisted of about a dozen thatched fishermen's cottages, many of which still survive in the Old Village, and some now house gift shops and tea rooms. Improved rail links and the presence of Queen Victoria at Osborne House encouraged more visitors to the Isle of Wight and the growth of the area.
