Whitehaven is a town and port that lies equidistant between Cumbria's two largest towns, Carlisle in the North and Barrow-in-Furness to the South.
Whitehaven was built out of shipping and mining and was one of the largest ports in the UK. These trades declined, the shipping due to competition from Liverpool and Bristol and Whitehaven has now become a leisure harbour. The town has a lot of the original Georgian architecture remaining today.
At the western end of the Lakes Whitehaven and the surrounding area offer many attractions which cater for all ages and interests. From the historic ruins, maritime history, beautiful walking and cycling, to festivals and music.
